Working long hours

While it may sound crazy to some, working long hours is a natural response to stress for those in high powered or high pressure positions. By working for longer periods of time, they feel like they can get everything done and thus lessen the stress that they have. But in these longer stretches of work time, they're not managing stress or preventing stress; they're creating more stress. Your body needs a break from time to time in order to 'reset' and get ready for another workweek. Here are some ways to break this habit.

Give yourself one or two days a week to work long hours - For those that are calmed by working longer hours, this will enable you to still get your 'fix,' but also allow you to be home on time more often than not. If you're working later every day, try working late every other day for a while until you can wean yourself down to fewer and fewer days.

Have one or two days a week of rest - Your body and your mind need a break every now and then, even if you don't think they do. They need time to process the things you've learned and the things you've experienced during the week. If you don't give yourself this time, your stress levels will pile up and cause even more strain in your life.

If you have to work long hours, find time for breaks - If you can not stop working long hours because of the nature of your job, at least try to fit in more breaks during your shift. Try heading outside for a walk or down to the parking lot for a few exercises. Just get away for a few minutes several times a day to make sure that you're not in 'work mode' every second of the day.

Make an appointment that you can't miss - When you have a workout partner; for example, try to schedule your time together right after work so that you have to leave on time. You might also want to sign up for classes or other activities that will keep you from staying too late too often.

Working long hours is still something that's heralded in today's society, but it's really just creating burnt out and tired employees who aren't able to work at their highest capacity. If you want to make it over the long term with your job, you need to start limiting the time you are spending working.
