Weight loss caused by stress

While many people would celebrate a sudden weight loss and criticize a sudden weight gain, when you're under stress, you may not even realize that it's happening. Many times, when you're feeling out of control, you try to find one thing in your life that you can control - and for many people, that has to do with food. If you're feeling like you have no control, you might stop eating or eat more as what you put into your mouth is completely under your control. But it's also not healthy to respond in this manner. Here are some stress management tips that will help you get your eating under control.
  • Keep a food journal - To still take advantage of feeling in control, but also to monitor your eating, try keeping a food journal. Write down everything you put in your mouth as well as when you ate it, who you ate it with, and how you were feeling. This can help you see when you are responding to stress with food and point out your patterns. For example, if you see that you eat more when you're angry, you can choose a new behavior to substitute this reaction.
  • Try to eat at regular intervals - Many people think eating is something that simply gets in the way of the rest of their day. In truth, eating is what allows us to work, to move, to think, and to breathe - and that makes a far more important topic. You need to eat in order to do things in your life, so try to eat something every few hours to keep your energy up and your stress at bay. When you aren't eating, your body can start to react and cause you to feel more stressed than you did before. Or the lack of nutrients can cause you to do things incorrectly, which can lead to more stress.
  • See your doctor - If you find that you are losing or gaining weight and your diet has not changed, you need to see your doctor. There may be a medical explanation for this change in weight that needs to be addressed. For example, those that lose weight without any change in diet might have thyroid issues or something more serious.

While you might be happy that you're stressed out and skinny, this isn't the healthiest way to lose weight.
