Sam Riordan | Treating anxietyEveryone has felt anxious at one point or another - it's only human. When our bodies are subjected to stress, the levels of adrenaline can rise, causing a heightened reaction in our bodies. We move faster, we breathe more shallowly, our hearts race. For some, this is a constant state of affairs, but it doesn't have to be. Here are some stress management tips and relaxation techniques that can help you remain calm.- Reduce the stimulants in your diet - While caffeine, nicotine, and sugar may all seem to be increasing your energy and helping you deal with your stress, they're actually causing your body to react more to the stress you are facing. To help your body remain at a more subdued level of anxiety, you need to cut out these items from your daily diet. Or at the very least, try to limit your use of them during stressful times.
- Realise that your anxious feelings will pass - Many anxiety-ridden people have a bigger problem when they think they will always be anxious and on edge. But the truth is that the adrenaline surges that might be causing you to feel bad will eventually be absorbed into your body and you will calm down. Try to remember this when you are feeling anxious and perhaps knowing that there's an end in sight will make the feelings more manageable.
- Get some exercise - Since you're providing your body with an increase in adrenaline, why not use it for something productive? Try heading outside or inside for a regular date with your favorite exercise activity. It doesn't have to be anything too strict or intense, but it will help your body process the adrenaline more quickly.
- Find something that soothes you - Everyone has something they can do to calm their frayed nerves. You just have to find out what yours is. Maybe you can take a hot bath while listening to soft music or you can paint or draw in your free time. Others like to play Solitaire on their computer or get lost in a book. Find something that will distract you from your anxiety and then be sure to do this activity often.
Anxiety doesn't have to be a negative part of your life. Think of it as your body's way of telling you that it's facing too much at the present time. Feeling anxious will give you a signal to start slowing down or performing one of the tasks in the above list. In time, you will learn to calm down naturally and prevent these anxious feelings.
