The Feldenkrais Method

Similar to the Alexander technique, the Feldenkrais Method works with individual people in order to teach a variety of relaxation techniques. With the understanding that the body is something that can hold onto tension and stress, the Feldenkrais Method tries to teach your body something new, a new way to cope with the stresses that are placed on it - whether physical or emotional.

There are several ways that you can learn more about the relaxation methods of the Feldenkrais Method. One of the most common ways to practice this method is through the Awareness through Movement program. In this kind of class, you would work with a practitioner to perform various movements. The practitioner would watch you move to see where you may be having troubles and then instruct you to do different things to improve your movement.

While it might seem like a small lesson to learn, the Feldenkrais Method allows you to see where you might be doing harm to your body - more so than you may be doing good. For example, if you walk in a certain way, you might be harming your knee over the years. Without correction, this can lead to problems with your knees. But if you learned how to correct this movement with the Feldenkrais Method, you would be able to walk without pain and without future problems.

Correcting a problem in your movement before it becomes a problem is the goal of these relaxation techniques.

During this Awareness though Movement session, you would learn about how your body works and have to concentrate hard on what your body is doing, rather than worrying about the outside cares of the world. You will also be given exercises to do by the practitioner to practice on your own time.

With functional integration, you will have the practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method actually guide you to the appropriate movement with your body. This can help some people who are physical learners when it comes to movement. But in either case, these relaxation methods are geared toward helping you release any tension from your body and any actions that might be causing that tension. Through constant practice and lessons, you will eventually create muscle memory and new habits for your body.
