We all know that our health is the most important aspect of our lives. Without health we have nothing: having all the money in the world is pointless if you don’t have the good health with which to enjoy it. Poor health results in us finding it difficult to work effectively, to play with our children, or to look after the household, and we often don’t have the energy to do simple daily activities or even to have some fun.
However, it is our state of mind that has the biggest impact on our overall personal health. If you’re the kind of person who reacts badly in a stressful situation, then you’re going to suffer more from the common symptoms of stress. On their own, these can cause emotional and physical problems, but when they combine to develop into a stress-related illness, they can cause a breakdown or a serious physical complaint.
Having a positive state of mind will change the way that you react to stress, so that instead of hindering you and negatively effecting your health, you can use your reactions to enhance your performance and to lead a more satisfying and happy life. This can be easily done by using a daily relaxation technique to help loosen up any tense muscles that have developed during the day and to maintain an alert but calm state of mind.
Throughout your life you’ll no doubt encounter many difficulties that will bring you down if you let them. Everybody has suffered from stress at some point in their life, but the way in which you react to those difficulties will determine the effect that they have on your personal health. If you allow your difficulties and stresses to build up and overwhelm you, you will soon start to feel the negative symptoms of stress, especially if you let your mind tell you that things are worse than they actually are!
Thinking about your problems in a negative way can cause feelings of depression, which means that everything you do might seem to go wrong, or that you feel incapable of making a better life. Letting depressive feelings persist will quickly start to affect your physical health: you might pick up infections and colds that you wouldn’t normally catch, and these can develop into more severe symptoms because your immune system is compromised. Before you know it, physical illnesses can bring you further down, cause additional stress, and send you into a never-ending circle of gloom and doom.
Say you lose your job and you find you can’t pay next month’s bills. This is a problem many people face, and it’s certainly within the realm of possibility for you. In your negative state of mind, you might cry that life isn’t fair and sit at home wondering why your boss gave you the sack. You might replay the scene over and over until you believe yourself to be a bad person, worthy of nothing. These thoughts will bring you down further until you are constantly thinking about where you will get the money to pay the bills when nobody in the world will give you a job. This stress can eventually take its toll on your physical body and your personal health until you actually start to suffer with a physical illness. Of course not everyone reacts this badly to stress, but again, it’s not impossible. And even if you react to a lesser degree, all that means is that you have a lesser degree of depression and stress: is that really an ideal state of affairs?
But if you stop and go back to the point where the problem first presents itself, and if you then improve your state of mind, then the whole scenario will improve in turn. Take a look at the same scenario from the opposite side by assuming that you have a very positive state of mind. Being sacked is not the end of the world, you might think: in fact, you were too good for that particular job anyway, and the boss never really appreciated the wonderful work you did. You are worthy of a better job with a bigger salary and better career prospects, and this is exactly the right time to go and find it. In this scenario, there’s no gloom and doom; in this scenario, your health doesn’t suffer. You actually come out of the difficult period as a stronger person and probably a bit healthier as well.
Even if you don’t naturally react well to stress, you can still turn the situation into a positive experience by having the right state of mind. Life is full of challenges, but if you meet each one with positive thoughts and the will to succeed—bolstered by daily relaxation exercises—you will come out stronger following each and every one.
