The Alexander Technique

As you are looking through various relaxation methods to use, you might stumble across the Alexander technique as a possibility. Developed by F. Mattias Alexander to help him overcome a sudden speech problem, this set of relaxation techniques is used to help a person overcome limitation in their lives as well as in their bodies.

This process of relaxation training is easy to understand if you see a connection between the physical parts of the body and the emotional effects that stress can have on them. For example, when you are stressed, you might grit your teeth whenever you are in a stressful situation. This can lead to stress induced headaches and pain. But if you could learn to react to stress differently, these physical symptoms would not occur.

What's interesting about these relaxation methods is that they start with the idea that we aren't always in control of what our body does in reaction to stress - and this is understandable. While we might think that we are in control of our bodies, our minds are actually the part that is demonstrating the way we feel. When we are stressed, we might look stressed to others, even though we might not be trying to show this to anyone around us.

Another compelling part of the Alexander technique is that it's focusing on the idea of habits that we have. Habits area things that we don't even realizing we are doing, until they hurt us or until someone else points them out. By retraining our bodies to have healthier habits and movements, we can create a less stressed and less tense body.

In a session for learning the Alexander technique, you would work with a trained specialist in the technique to move you through the relaxation training. They might use hand contact to manipulate various parts of the body in order to change the habits you have in place. The training sessions are individualized to the person's anatomy as everyone is different.

It can take thirty to forty sessions for you to see any relief of your stressful habits and feelings, but the Alexander technique is still one of the more popular relaxation methods available. Just be sure to look for a well-trained practitioner before you sign up for a treatment program.
