TENS therapy

If you sometimes feel like the traditional relaxation methods just aren't working for you, maybe you need something more shocking to get the job done. With relaxation techniques like those in TENS therapy, you can use the energy of electricity to gently stimulate your body into a more relaxed state. In reality, your body does this naturally, but sometimes it just needs a little help.

TENS therapy stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. While it is usually used for pain relief of sore muscles and other soft tissues in the body, TENS therapy relaxation training can also be used for stress. What happens is that the practitioner places electrodes onto the skin. These electrodes are placed either on the actual affected area of the body or along the energy meridian that's being blocked by the stress of the life of the patient.

Just as acupressure and acupuncture relaxation methods use the meridians of the body, TENS therapy helps to reconnect blocked areas by gently sending a milli-amp of electricity through those electrodes. During the treatment, you will feel a little warm or perhaps a small shock, but this process is not painful and does not produce any side effects. However, these are relaxation techniques that need to be implemented by someone that is trained in handling a TENS unit.

What happens is that the electricity is thought to override the messages that are sent along these meridians of the body - that's why TENS therapy is used so often in pain relief. By taking over these message pathways, things like pain or stress can be halted and diverted. The body also reacts by creating its own form of pain relief naturally, which can also help to calm the body.

While some patients may have some redness or discomfort due to the gel adhesive used in the electrode, most people feel nothing but relaxation at the end of a session. However, these kinds of relaxation training methods are not to be used on anyone with a heart condition, pacemaker, or someone that has any other metal parts in their body.

The great thing about TENS therapy is that it is non-addictive and it also creates a sensation of immediate calmness after a treatment. And the thought is that with more stimulation, the body will begin to perform these relaxation methods and diversions on its own.
