South West London or over the telephone

Eliminate the stress, fear and anxiety that may be causing bruxism

What is bruxism?

Bruxism is the term that refers to an incessant and unintentional grinding, gnashing and clenching of the teeth at inappropriate times. This disorder equally affects adults as well as kids. The condition of bruxism is normally accompanied by a wide range of symptoms including abraded teeth, facial pain, headaches, dislocation of the jaw, tongue indentations and the like. Bruxism occurs an average of 25 times per night, in four-to-five second episodes.

What causes bruxism?

The patterns of our behavior in our daily routine are strongly influenced by the happenings around us. We usually consider that our physical and mental selves are two separate entities and that one does not affect the other. However, the fact is our emotional or mental health is intertwined with our physical health - the body/mind is one system, each affecting the other. This means that the presence of negative emotions such as stress and anxiety lead to a harmful affect on our health.

Various factors lead to the condition of bruxism. Psychological factors and emotions of anxiety, fear and overall competitiveness are widely accepted as the main causes of this disorder.

Research indicates that individuals suffering from bruxism often remain tense over matters of trivial importance. Such people develop the habit of being in such a frame of mind almost unconsciously and hence just fail to realize the onset of the disorder. If left uncontrolled, symptoms of bruxism, arising out of feelings of stress and tension can actually begin to impact other aspects of the person’s health.
