Taking work home

When it feels like our To Do lists are never going to get any smaller, we might think that more work is the answer to our problems. We start by staying at work longer and then we start taking work home with us. While this may initially help us out in the short term, continuously bring work home with you can create a situation in which you can't finish your work unless you bring it home with you - and then your stress levels will rise exponentially. To help prevent taking work home, here are some stress management techniques you can use today:
  • Create a schedule and stick to it - You need to clearly define your work time and your personal time if you want to stop taking work home with you. Find a schedule that works for you and your workload and then stick with it. This might mean that you try a few different schedules before you find something that works, but once you do, you need to work only when you're scheduled and do not do ANYTHING work related outside of your scheduled times.

  • Do not set up a work account at home - If at all possible, make sure that you can not access your work email when you are home. This will prevent you from doing 'just a little' work when you're sitting at home. Try to prevent anyone from calling you at home with work problems unless they're true emergencies as well. Turn off your work phone or at least put it on a silent setting so that you can live your life without worrying about the phone ringing.

  • Create a reason to not work - By signing up for a class or some other activity, you will not be able to work when you get off of your scheduled work time. Sign up for an exercise class or perhaps other non-work classes. You will find yourself getting more things done at work in anticipation of this time away.

  • Personal time is personal time - Make sure that vacations and breaks are free of anything related to work. Tell your family not to talk about anything work related and don't bring your computer or work phone with you. Be sure that everyone at your workplace knows that you will be gone and assign someone else to handle problems that come up.

  • You can stop working and rest - your body needs it and your mind needs it. By taking work home with you, you're only prolonging your work day and decreasing your personal time.
