First of all, the movements themselves are fluid and flow from one area to the next without stopping, as though you were dancing instead of working out or exercising. This allows your body to slow down and become more still. You will also begin to become more graceful as you continue to practice and be able to bring these graceful movements into your everyday life too. In terms of relaxation training with T'ai Chi, there are a number of different schools that you can choose from:
Each of these relaxation training methods were derived from different families in China and can provide you with similar movements, though sometimes specific routines that are followed. Another component of this relaxation training is the focus on the breath as you move from one position to the next. You are exhaling with some movements and breathing in for others. This allows your body to become more energetic as you complete the series of movements. You will also notice that your body becomes warm or cool depending how you breathe during a movement. And finally, another factor in these relaxation methods is the focus on visualization. Many of these movements are named after things that are nature or animals. By picturing these things as you move, you will center your mind and allow your body to move more naturally from one point to the next. T'ai Chi is a process through which you process your stress through moving your body from one point to another. It can be very meditative in the way that you don't get a chance to focus too much on anything outside of the movements. And this is a good thing when you want to still your self. |
