Stress from suspiciousness

Many people wouldn't even think of suspiciousness as a way that they react to stress. If you stop for a moment, however, to think of the last time you could have used some relaxation techniques, you might see the signs. You may have begun to think that everyone was out to get you or that things were going wrong because someone else was making sure they were going wrong for you. Stop for a moment, and use these stress management tips:
  • Write down the things that you are thinking - Whenever you begin to feel a bit suspicious, write down everything you suspect and put it in an envelope. Let it sit in a desk drawer or a cabinet for twenty-four hours and then pull it back out and read it. You may have a different perspective by then.

  • Ask a trusted friend what they think - If you believe that others are out to harm you, explain the situation to a trusted friend to see what their take on it is. They might be able to steer you back into reality by showing you that you're either exaggerating or possibly just misreading someone else's actions. Talk your problems through with them until you see the situation from their perspective.

  • Ask yourself, "What am I missing here?" - By taking the time to sort out your current situation and looking for pieces of information that might make the situation clearer, you can begin to realise on your own that you needn't be suspicious. You just might be missing a piece of information that would explain everything.

  • Don't worry about everyone else - While the heat of office politics might be hard to avoid, try to focus on the job that you are doing rather than what others are doing. Even if you're a stay at home mom, taking the time to look at your own actions first will help you maintain an even keel to your demeanor, especially when you're under stress.

  • Ask yourself, "What else could be going on here?" - While you might immediately jump to a conclusion about something, try to find other ways to explain what is going on. If someone were to swerve in front of you in traffic, it's not necessarily because they want to be rude to you; they might be heading to the hospital for an emergency.

Suspiciousness can be a part of your stress experience, but it doesn't have to be that way if you learn how to relax.
