Stress from major business or work changes

Getting called into a large meeting with your co-workers can be a stressful experience - especially when there's bad news about your company. Restructuring and downsizing might seem commonplace these days, but that doesn't mean they're any less stressful on you. By learning some relaxation techniques to use at work, you can help to reduce your overall feelings of stress and make it through anything that might happen on the job.

To begin, you want to realise that communication is going to the key to your survival. You may want to approach your supervisor to begin to establish a dialogue that will allow you both to feel comfortable with each other. This will help you in future communications so that you feel like a person rather than just another employee. Ask to set up a meeting and talk about the responsibilities you have and whether there are any things that you need to do to improve. This shows that you care about your job and will help you feel like you're contributing to your workplace.

Next, you will want to learn how to keep calm in the face of bad news. If you're hearing that bad things are going to happen via the office gossip, you may want to remember that these rumours aren't true until someone from management says they're true - so there's no need to worry about them. If you are worried, simply ask your supervisor (that you're now comfortable talking with) to address your concerns. When you are told bad news, take a moment to breathe in and out to help calm your heart and your mind. Just ten seconds will allow you to regroup your stress and look at the issue objectively. Think about the following:

  • What does this mean for me?
  • What is the worst thing that could happen as a result?
  • Will this matter in six months?

By taking the time to put your problems in perspective, you will create a calmer vision of your future, instead of the stressful disaster that's probably been playing in your mind. Look at the issue as something that's not happening to you. This can help you remove the emotions from the situation and allow you to see solutions or ways of handling the issue head-on.

Stress at work is unavoidable, but how you manage it should not be. By taking the time to breathe, communicate, and put problems into perspective, you may even make work a happy place to be.
