Profound Relaxation Becoming ever more at ease within yourself
Charles Moore The4thR | Stress from having a babyWhile the actual physical job of having a baby is physically stressful, the after effects of having a child can be overwhelming for a mother and father. Not only are you now responsible for another person's life, but you're also faced with a new relationship with others in your life. You might be experiencing unsolicited advice from your parents and friends as well as noticing that people are paying more attention to your child than to you. Combined together, it makes sense that some relaxation techniques and stress management is necessary.- Some time as a family alone is necessary - A good way to begin to solidify your new family is to refrain from having a lot of visitors in the beginning of your child's life. Even if only for a few weeks, this will allow you to get your own routine down as well as cause you to problem solve on your own. You will begin to feel more confident in your ability to be a parent and will be able to fend off any advice from others about your parenting skills.
- Take some time away from being a parent - Once you get your confidence up, it's time to step away from being a parent once in a while. You can start to get out of the house after a few months, re-establishing your relationship with your spouse or partner. This will also increase your confidence in your child care choices and allow you to not fear leaving your child for a few hours. Start by leaving for a few hours or by having someone take care of your child when you're still in the vicinity, then progress to longer periods of time away.
- Get some sleep - A lot of the stress of having a child can be exaggerated by a lack of sleep in the beginning year of life. What you will want to do is sleep whenever your child is sleeping. This will help you get on their schedule and make it easier for you to get some rest when you can.
- Take care of yourself - It might be easier to eat processed foods and junk right after having a child, but it will cause your body to feel sluggish and even more tired than you already are. Try to make healthy choices instead.
Having a child also includes the stress of making the right choices for your new little person. Try to have someone that you can call for advice (paediatrician, parent, friend, etc.) as well as recognize that you will make some mistakes - and that's okay. You don't have to be a perfect parent, just the best that you can. Read parenting books if you like to get advice, but remember that your child might not follow all of the guidelines that some books advise - and that's okay.
