Stress from going on holiday

You would think that going on holiday would be a time for relaxation, but for some, going on holiday is the most stressful part of their year. There is a sense of loss for a clear schedule that is defined by non-holiday days. And others find it stressful to plan a holiday, so it takes the fun out of the entire trip. To help make your next holiday a time that you cherish instead of dread, follow these holiday relaxation methods:

Plan, plan, plan

It seems like common sense, but when you're someone that likes a schedule or a clear routine, take the time to create one for your holiday. You don't have to schedule every minute, but you should try to have a clear idea of what every day will entail in terms of activity, location, and transportation methods. This will allow you to feel like you're not wasting time on your holiday as well as allow you to feel in control of your unfamiliar surroundings.

Plan in ‘free' time

Of course, when you are on holiday, you need to have time to unwind, so add that into your schedule as well. While you might not know what to do with this time at first, as the holiday goes on and you begin to detach from your non-holiday life, you will begin to savour this time.

Don't bring work or responsibilities with you

This means that you need to leave your computer, your mobile phone, your PDA, etc. at home. This holiday time should be a time when you're doing things that you want to do, rather than things that others want you to do. If you feel that you can bring these items with you and not use them in a way that's work-related, that's fine, but for most of us, we could stand to have a little ‘unplugged' time.

Remember that you're on holiday

When things go wrong, and they may, you need to remember that you're on holiday and you don't need to rush to fix everything right away. You have the time to figure things out and you will sort out whatever issue has come up. Repeat to yourself that, "I'm on holiday and everything is fine. I'm in no rush."

Move a little slower than you normally do

On your holiday, try to move a little more slowly, breathe a little more slowly, sleep a little longer, shower a little more slowly, etc. You can savour everything that you're doing, so take the time to do so.
