Stress from despondency

Feeling despondent during times of stress is natural. You can feel like everything is going wrong and that there's just nothing you can do that will make it stop. So, in a sense, you give up your control of your situation, often making things worse in the process. When you learn the basics of managing stress, you can move away from despondency and start realising that you're not as helpless as it may seem.
  • Figure out exactly what you need to do in the next two hours - Since the average attention span of adults is approximately two hours, try to thing only in those increments. What do you have to do in the next two hours? Make a list of the things that you need to do and only do those things. Don't worry about anything else. Turn off your phone and your e-mail and just do the things that you need to do. This will help you scratch some things off your To Do list while also making you feel more in control.

  • Look at your schedule as flexible - Often, we will create strict lists for ourselves of things that NEED to be done in a certain amount of time. But whenever we go over, we start to feel helpless in that situation, making us want to simply give up. But when you change your thinking into a more flexible style, you will be able to get more done, even if you do fall behind. When things start to fall behind, start to readjust your schedule right then. This will allow you to feel like you're back in control and ready to continue getting back on track.

  • Feel out of control for a moment - Stop for a moment and think about how you're feeling. Let the feelings of stress and despondency wash over you for a minute. In that minute, did the world come to an end? No. So, by realising that your worries aren't the end of the world, you can start rethinking them, looking for solutions, and tackling your situation.

  • Always look for a solution or an action - By simply getting up and doing something about your situation, you will feel more in control. Even if you're simply mailing a bill or taking out the trash at home, these are all little steps that will make you feel like you're doing something and that you can handle more.
