Stress from change in sleeping habits

For most of us, a change in our sleeping habits is usually the result of stress, rather than being the proponent of stress. However, with the maddening rush of today's society, more of us are finding our personal time being eaten away by all of our responsibilities. And in doing so, we're finding that our sleeping time is becoming less and less. When this happens, it causes us to feel exhausted in our everyday lives and makes us feel more frustrated with our lives, adding more stress to the stress we're already feeling. To deal with the stress of a change in your sleeping habits, you can follow several relaxation techniques and tips:

Create a restful space in your bedroom

For many of us, our stress spills into our bedrooms, whether we recognise it or not. We bring our laptops and our work piles into the bedroom, hoping to feel less stressed when we're working. However, when you begin to create a connection to work in your bedroom, you will create an association of stress with sleep. To change this connection, you need to remove any indications of stress from your room. Most experts will tell you that you don't want any televisions, electronics, computers, etc. in your bedroom. Your bedroom should be a place for sleeping and sexual relations only.

Make a routine for bedtime

To help you get back your regular sleeping habits, you will want to choose a time that you should fall asleep by and then construct a routine that will allow you to wind down at the end of your day. This can include stopping work and exercise a few hours before you go to bed as well as doing something that soothes you and makes you ready for bed. Listen to quiet music or have a cup of herbal tea or warm milk. Create a routine that you will follow every night and in time, your body will recognise this routine as a signal for falling asleep.

Make sleep a priority

Your body needs to sleep in order to repair itself from the rigors of the day. To make sleep something that can be easily disregarded in times of stress is not only harmful, but unnecessary. When you're fully rested, you will be able to handle you responsibilities all the better. Schedule in your sleeping times and stick to this schedule - you deserve it.

What you can also recognise is that changing your sleeping habits is quite simple - your body wants to rest. And while it might take a few weeks to get your sleeping habits back to normal, you can look forward to more rested days.

These habits can also be used when your sleeping habits change during the addition of a newborn - though you might not always get the sleep that you want.
