Stress from change in living conditions

Your shelter is your home base for your life. It's where you go back to at the end of a day at work and it's where you gather with your partner, family and friends. When a change in this situation occurs, it can be quite upsetting. You can feel displaced (both literally and figuratively) and feel like you don't have a place to call home. To help you handle this time of your life, you will want to learn some basic relaxation training methods that will allow you to process this change in a positive way.

Be realistic

It's very easy to say that things are worse than they are. This will make things seem worse than they are, but that's not going to help your stress levels. Instead, try to look at your situation as realistically as possible. Chances are very good that you're not going to be homeless because of the change in your living conditions. Think of the worst possible result of this change and then realise that it's not going to happen.

Come up with an action plan

Once you've learned that your living condition is going to change or you notice that your living situation has changed, you need to come up with a way to be at peace with this change. This requires planning on your part in accordance with your goals for your current living situation. If you're getting evicted, you need to come up with a place to stay until you find a new place. This may mean that you call friends and family to see if you can stay with them, etc. Try to come up with ‘what happens next' to give yourself a sense of control over your situation.

Find ways to enjoy your life outside of your home

If you're living in a bad neighbourhood or you're suddenly faced with a smaller space or a spouse that's left; you need to find ways to fill that change. This might mean that you spend more time on hobbies and interests you have or perhaps changing the living environment so that it doesn't reflect the change - i.e. removing the pictures of your ex-partner. Try to find action oriented ways to make your living condition liveable.

Change in living conditions can be everything from being evicted, having a partner or roommate leave, or even physical changes in the environment. But while each may be uncomfortable at first, you can also look at them as the perfect opportunity to make changes that you'd always wanted to make - it's a new beginning, rather than an ending.
