Stress from being fired

Whether you liked your job or not, it's not a good feeling when you get fired or let go. There are a myriad of feelings that you can experience from feeling somehow less than adequate to feeling angry at the injustice of the situation. However, these feelings can lead to further problems besides your unemployment if you're not looking into stress management techniques to help you cope during this trying time.

A good place to start right after your talk with your boss is to sit down and list the reasons you were given for being fired. Then, you will want to look at each of these reasons to see how accurate they are. Put yourself in your boss' shoes to see if these concerns were valid. Being honest with yourself is crucial at this point because while you might be feeling badly about errors that you have made and missteps that you took, this is actually a useful learning opportunity for you. And in taking control of your future by learning from your mistakes, you can prepare yourself to be a better employee for your next job.

Other useful relaxation methods include:

  • Not obsessing about the fine details - Once you have made your lists of things to learn from your firing, you need to let these reasons go. You can not do anything about them, but to strive to not repeat certain actions.
  • Not guessing about the reasons - If you haven't been given any clear reasons for your firing, you will want to try to avoid making up things that might have been the cause. Not only are you unable to verify these reasons, but your list of mistakes might be far worse than the employer's. If you feel that you need a reason for the dismissal, talk to a trusted friend or ex co-worker to see what light they may be able to shed on your situation.
  • Taking time to move on - Instead of sitting around your flat, thinking about what you have lost, start focusing on what you have gained. You are now in a position to find a job that will suit you better. Take this time to start looking for a new job and networking with those that will be able to help you secure employment.

Another cause of stress after being fired is the idea that your next employer might not want to hire you because of the situation. However, nearly everyone has been fired at one point or another, so it's not as much of a deterrent to employment as you might think. When you are asked about the situation, be honest about what happened, but try to explain what you have learned as well in order to show that you are a better employee as a result.
