Learning to relax

Relaxation Re-defined

Let’s be honest, when most people think about relaxation they’re mind goes to a holiday in the sun, sinking into the sofa with a favourite book or movie, or enjoying a night out with friends. But could there be more to relaxation than this? Something that’s perhaps more permanent and functional? Something that doesn’t require “taking time out”? This short article presents a different idea of relaxation, explains its benefits, how it’s taught, and gives you some tips on things you can do today to introduce it into your life.

Functional Relaxation

Functional relaxation is a way of being as you go about your day-to-day life. A way of being where you are relaxed by default, even while you’re on the go, at work, at home or out socially. It’s mainly characterized by an absence of tension in your body, having a strong sense of connection with the larger systems of which we’re all a part, and having your focus of attention on “what’s possible/what’s working”. When a person has Functional Relaxation they are operating at their best, making decisions in their life that keeps them at their best, and they have clarity about what it is they really want. They also typically benefit from better health as well.

The Functional Relaxation System

This is the system used to teach Functional Relaxation. It’s made up of four modules. The Body; Mind Control; Situational Relaxation (at work, at home, out socially) and Relaxation for Health (insomnia, pain control, healing). It can be learnt in a number of ways, including 1-1 coaching, attending a 2-day training, and for those wanting just an introduction into our methods, we also run a Learn to Relax Tele-Class Series.

Tips on things you can be doing today to introduce Functional Relaxation into your life

1. Your Body

Increase your awareness of how you are using and moving your body by spending 5 minutes twice a day moving consciously. Track as much as you can during these 5 minute awareness sessions, with the aim of making each and every move as efficient (free of unnecessary tension) as possible.

2. Mind Control

When you notice yourself lost in your mind and stuck in a spiral of thought, ask yourself “Is what I am thinking about actually based on anything real and tangible in the outside world, or am I making it all up in my head?”. If you discover you’re making it up, tell yourself “This is all my illusion!” and immediately put your attention on something that you can touch, taste, feel, smell or hear in the environment around you.

3. Situational Relaxation…at work

If someone at work starts having a rant at you, instead of jumping down their throat in response and ending up in a verbal battle, practice the discipline of Saying Nothing.

4. Relaxation for Health…healing

Instead of cursing pain and other symptoms of ill-health, get into the habit of warm heartedly acknowledging them by thanking them for the message they are bringing you.

Learning to let go

Is there someone in your life that you used to get on really well with, but no longer do? If this is the case, your body will be sending you the signals to say that it’s time to let go of that relationship. Even though this may seem a painful and stressful thing to do, it will be a lot less painful and stressful than continuing to ignore your instincts. Remaining in a relationship that compromises you in some way, will quite likely impact your health. Let go of relationships that are no longer a match for you, and move on toward who it is you are becoming.

Let us help you. Find out about The 4th R's services.

Under the spotlight

Working with your doctor for optimal health

Following these tips will help to make sure that your visit to your doctor doesn’t leave you feeling any worse than when you went in.

Find a doctor that’s on your wavelength

Don’t assume that every doctor is the same in terms of their technical skills and knowledge, or beliefs and approach to medicine. Be sure to find one whose style and manner is consistent and supportive of your own.

Go to a doctor who emphasizes the positive

A doctor saying “it could take up to 5 years for you to recover from this” is not as helpful to you as “you’re well on the way to a speedy recovery…you’ll start noticing how much better you feel real soon”. If your doctor spends more time focusing on the worst case scenario (glass half empty approach), then it’s time to find another doctor – one that emphasizes the positive.

Don’t expect a prescription

An eager to please doctor may readily oblige you with a prescription for pills just to meet your expectation, when in fact a natural alternative, or just ‘giving it time’ could have been more appropriate. Let your doctor know that you don’t expect a prescription necessarily.

Question your doctor if he prescribes drugs or surgery

Feel free to ask what ever questions you need to, to be sure that the course of action your doctor is suggesting is in fact right for you. Getting another doctor’s opinion can also be helpful to help you make a decision on how to proceed.

Learn to Relax Tele-Class Series

Next start date: 3rd April

Only £69!

The Relaxation Training Tele-Class Series is a carefully crafted program that's been designed specifically for people who want (or need!) to learn how to relax, without delay, and from the convenience of their own home. If this is you, here's more about what you can expect:

Over the course of six weeks (1 hour live tele-class per week) you will learn:

Lesson One

How to relax your body and free yourself from the harmful tension that leads to common aches and pains

Self-awareness (specifically bodily-awareness in this case), is essential for health, and it's the bedrock for Functional Relaxation. This tele-class will teach you, step-by-step, what to do to increase your self-awareness and consequently your levels of personal power, choice and control.

Lesson Two

How come certain people just seem to be so "sorted" and relaxed all the time: Discover the timeless wisdom that these people all have in common

What is it that makes some people so naturally positive, content and relaxed, while others strive to lighten up and let go?! This tele-class teaches the fundamental premises by which the former group of people live their lives - fundamental premises that are available to you, so that you can replace anxiety with calm, lighten up and let go.

Lesson Three

How making adjustment to your physiology directly impacts how you are feeling

Ever noticed how some days it's as if you can't put a foot down wrong and "life's good", and others ....well ...I'll leave you to fill in the detail! Your body/mind is one system, and the experience you are having is a result of a complex biological process. You have within you the 'blueprint' for how you are when you are at your best, and accessing this highly resourceful state is done by making certain adjustments to your physiology. Would you like to know how to be at your best intentionally, instead of it being left to chance of having a good day? Then be sure to listen in to this tele-class!

Lesson Four

3 lesser known "stress busting" techniques that are ESSENTIAL to a life that works - (So essential that we think they should be taught in schools!): Guaranteed to especially help the most worrying / over busy / indecisive mind

Imagine having up your sleeve, accessible anytime and anywhere, your own "Internal Compass" that will help you to make decisions that never compromise you and always keep you on track toward the life that you want to be living. Now imagine what it will be like to regain control when ever you get stuck in one of those worry loops (when you keep replaying things in your mind that have already happened, or going over things you anticipate happening in the future). Next, imagine being able to diffuse potentially explosive (and stressful!) situations just by asking yourself one simple question...

Lesson Five

How to control the power of your mind and actually live the life that you want to be living

This tele-class is where you'll be introduced to the mythology aspect of the MythoSelf Process (the method we primarily use to teach Functional Relaxation). Human's have always made up stories (myths) to make sense of the world around them, and provide a "map" by which to live their life. Modern man, including you and I, are no exception. We create myths to live by, and many people also live by myths that have been handed down to them through parents/carers, teachers, friends the media etc. What myth are you living by? Is it one that is in keeping with who it is you want to be becoming?

Lesson Six

Immediate and effective natural pain control techniques and Top Tips for getting a full and restful nights sleep

Benefit from the experience of someone who has himself, for well over 10 years, refined how to control pain naturally at its onset. Charles Moore will teach you things that you can do for yourself to naturally manage pain, and also provide you with proven techniques to help even the most die-hard insomniac get a full and restful nights sleep.
