Tuning into your body's logic

It's important to understand that your body has its own logic - it's own way of telling you what's going on inside, but how well do you tune into this incredible information resource?

It's hardly surprising that many people have lost touch with what's going on from their neck down. Our education system is biased toward a clear separation of body/mind. Cultural stereotypes and advertising portray the body as little more than a sexual object. And physical training techniques and medical practices often view the body as a sophisticated machine, needing to be repaired by a professional when necessary.

If you learn to listen to your body, it's highly likely that the stress you experience (which typically leads to aches, pains and general ill-health), can be avoided all togehter.

Set aside time in your day to do nothing but switch off to external stimulus, and focus your attention inside. What is your body telling you? Is there anything in your life that's out of balance that you would do well to address?

The Say Nothing Technique

Sometimes it’s in your silence that most is conveyed and achieved, which is why The Say Nothing Technique is so powerful.

So when is saying nothing the best thing to do?

  • When you have a sense that the behaviour of the other person is most likely happening because they’re under pressure, feeling stressed, hungry, tired or not feeling well.
  • When you’re feeling pressured, argumentative, hungry, tired or unwell yourself.
  • When your primary motive for responding is to prove the other person wrong, have the last word, or to play the role of victim or aggressor.

What do I do exactly?

As creator of the MythoSelf Process Joseph Riggio Ph.D. would say, you have to “hold the space”. This means operating from your centre, where you feel most stable and grounded, while allowing things to take their course on the outside. It also means holding in mind the outcome that you ultimately want for you and the other person/people.

So for example, the trigger occurs and you decide that The Say Nothing Technique is your best course of action. You bring to mind what it is that you ultimately want for you and for the other person/people (e.g. to create a loving and supportive environment in which the whole family can develop and grow), and you simultaneously access the place within yourself where you are most stable and grounded. Now, from this position, allow things to unfold, and be pleasantly surprised at how things progress!

Obstacles explained: Understanding their true meaning

Ever wondered why there always seems to be obstacles between you and what it is you most want?

A universal fact of life is that when your heart and mind is set on something, all kinds of things tend to show up to test your resolve by trying to pull you off track. Things like family, friends, and even serendipitous meetings with strangers act as obstacles, and your task is to ‘get past’ these people and forge on toward what it is you want.

In mythological terms, these people are known as Threshold Guardians. They are there to challenge and test your worthiness, and only when you have proven yourself worthy will they let you by (i.e. let you cross that particular threshold).

Examples of challenges and tests, are:

  • Bringing you information that’s contrary to your beliefs;
  • Making you jump through hoops before you can have something that you need; and
  • Withdrawing something from you that’s integral to your progress

Most likely, if a person isn’t completely confident within themselves and with what it is they are doing/what it is they want, they will fail the tests of these threshold guardians. This happens for people who are externally referenced instead of internally referenced (i.e. internally referenced people know they are OK and on track from the inside out, instead of the outside in).

Here are some tips to help you get past these threshold guardians, the next time they show up in your life:

  1. Understand that your life is a journey, and that within that journey, here are thresholds to be crossed.
  2. Recognize a person who is an obstacle between you and where you’re heading, as a threshold guardian, and accept this as a universal law just to be gotten on with.
  3. The same person that is a threshold guardian one day, may not be a threshold guardian another day. (It’s a role that people – including you!! – steps in and out of).
  4. Trust your own instincts and follow them. You can do this by ‘going inside’ and asking yourself, “Is this right for me?” If it is, then following your instincts and don’t be swayed by the opinions of others.
  5. Each time you bow to the needs, expectations and motivations of others, you are sacrificing a small part of yourself. Keep in mind how good it feels to maintain your integrity, and be true to yourself.

Stopping Headaches Without Drugs

New Swedish research concludes that several types of non-drug treatments can provide long-lasting improvements for patients with chronic tension headaches.

The research team of physical therapists from Gothenburg’s Sahlgrenska University Hospital tested physical exercise, relaxation training, and acupuncture as alternatives to drugs. They say it is important that analgesics are discontinued as a first step in treating tension headaches.

The research team studied 90 patients, who had chronic tension-type headaches for an average of 7 years. The different therapies were all approximately equally successful.
