  10. When you're excited, run around and jump up and down.

The problems most people have in regard to social or professional situations revolve around the fact that they allow themselves to be intimidated. Being intimidated by "the other guy" causes stress levels to rise, and being able to relax becomes very difficult. Power Tool 1: Posture
Does your posture suggest "I'm only a salesman/housewife/clerk?" Does it say to people "I'm small and unimportant?" Your posture speaks volumes and if it's shouting out these kinds of self effacing thoughts, then you're going to be intimidated no matter how great your knowledge or ability might be. Practice adopting a powerful posture by creating in your minds eye a picture of strength and power. Look out for people who seem to already have a powerful posture. Notice everything you can about their posture, and copy it in your own way.

Power Tool 2: Preparation
Being prepared means that you will naturally be more confident and this will be reflected in your posture and behaviour. In a work situation, think about what "ace" you can carry up your sleeve that, when presented, will firmly position you as someone to respect. Examples of "aces" may be a particular area of knowledge, or demonstration of a particular skill. In a social situation, have up your sleeve a few conversation topics that will position you as an equal and someone to take notice of.

Power Tool 3: Participate
The trick with this power tool is to speak up within the first 60 seconds of being with the other person. Speaking up within the first minute establishes you as a player and that you have confidence in yourself.

A fresh look at goal setting

It's particularly common this time of year to be thinking about the future. Goals are being set by individuals the world over in a determined effort to turn over a new leaf, kick old habits and move toward a life that works. However, of the millions of well-intentioned people who set out their goals, only a small number are successful in their pursuits.

How would it be if instead of 'what you want' being things to attain on the outside (for example, a new job, a better car, more money, to find that special someone...) you switched the focus of 'what you want' to be a way of being inside yourself.

With this alternative focus, your goal might become "to maintain a sense of peace inside" (peace could be interchanged with freedom, aliveness, comfort, balance - any word that matches how you want to be inside yourself as you go about your life). If this were your goal, your number 1 decision criteria becomes "will doing 'x' (what ever that may be) allow me to remain in 'peace'?".

If the answer is "no", you don't do it. If the answer is "yes" you do it. If the answer is "I'm not sure" you don't do it until you have enough information to be able to clearly decide yes or no.
