Learning to relax

Desire. Expectation. Readiness. Do you have all three?

No matter how much you might wish you could eliminate stress, relax, or take steps to naturally improve your health, without desire, readiness and expectation all being present, you may be finding it hard to achieve the results you want. Here are some pointers to help you have all three.

Desire
This is the aspect of learning to relax that's dependent upon really wanting to be able to do it. Most people have no shortage of desire, but if this isn't the case for you, what needs to happen so it is? Is there something that you have to let go of?

Expectation
This means to expect to be able to relax. When you expect that you are going to be able to relax, it's becomes a fait accompli. It moves into the realm of being a certain future. Do you expect that you'll be relaxed, and able to sustain it as you go about your day-to-day life? Can you envision yourself this way?

Readiness
This is the aspect that makes you act. The functional piece that propels you into getting on with it, and doing what you need to do. What actions are you taking to make what you desire and expect become a reality?

How much time are you spending in La La Land?

In a land far far away, there gathers people from far and wide that spend most of their time living an illusion. That place is called La La Land.

  • In La La Land it's not uncommon to find people spending days on end believing that what they are speaking in their head or out loud to people is real!
  • In La La Land it's not uncommon to find people awake at night because of worries and concerns that aren't based on anything real!
  • In La La Land it's not uncommon to find people getting sick because they aren't distinguishing between what's real and what they've made up!

La La Land doesn't have to be like this though. Some people go there, and fully realize that they are there. The voice in those people's heads would be saying:

"I'm in La La Land!! and what I'm thinking right n(o)w is all made up!!"

These people are able to distinguish between what they are saying (out loud or to themselves), that's grounded, and the things they are saying (out loud or to themselves) that's not grounded. We think that this is a very good thing to be able to do, as it tends to keep things real and keep you "in the n(o)w".

Defining Grounded and Not Grounded

  • Speaking that is Grounded is based upon evidence that exists outside your head in the 'real world'.
  • Speaking that is Not Grounded is not based on any evidence outside your head in the 'real world'.

Your body doesn't distinguish between your 'grounded' speaking, and your 'non-grounded' speaking. Your body assumes it to all be real. The consequence of this is that your organs, muscles and vital life systems, respond to all your speaking, real and illusionary.

Exercise

This 3-part exercise will help you discover how much of your speaking is grounded, and how much is non-grounded. You will need someone to do this exercise with you. It can be a lot of fun, and it will be very useful to you both.

Part One
Have a conversation with your partner making sure that you go out of your way to make comments that are grounded. Take a few minutes doing this.

Part Two
Have a conversation with your partner making sure that you go out of your way to make comments that are not grounded. Take a few minutes doing this.

It's quite likely that Part Two was much more "exciting". Was there more noise, more energy in the room, and more to talk about???

Part Three
Repeat the above exercise, but this time put more energy into the grounded conversation, and no energy into the non-grounded conversation.
