Recognize the call when it selects you

The idea of the Call to Adventure comes from the great work of mythologist Joseph Campbell, and his development of the model of human experience called the "Hero's Journey".

The Call to Adventure is a process of selection. Let's look at an example. A person is getting on with "life as usual" and something occurs that causes that person an interruption to their ordinary existence. The thing that occurs is usually something that creates an unstable situation. Things were ticking along, but after this thing that occurs, it becomes hard to just tick along as you had been - or sometimes it becomes out right impossible!

This occurrence - or interruption - is the Call to Adventure. It's a call from deep within a person (an inner calling to resolve a longing) that is saying "wake up and take responsibility". The person receiving the call is called the Hero.

Sometimes, when the call is received, the Hero may be reluctant. He is trying to avoid responsibility. In this case the call has to occur repeatedly, often escalating in "volume" in order to be heard. (Note: A Call can include a crisis such as ill health).

Other times the Hero is willing and answers the Call straight away. Answering the call marks the beginning of the "Hero's Journey". The person crosses the threshold into the unknown and begins the adventure of their life.

More often though the Hero is unwilling (they are fearful of leaving the comfort and safety of the ordinary world that they know). They will put on a good fight and it can take tremendous prodding before they answer their inner Call (some people ne(v)er do). These struggles are referred to as Refusal of the Call and a person assigns them self to a life of misery.

Why allow fear to keep you locked into a life of misery? Magical help shows up for the willing Hero - but you first must recognize the call when it selects you, and answer it.

The ultimate cure for suffering

In the same way that physical pain is given to you as a sign of dis-ease or illness somewhere, suffering is a sign that there's falsehood somewhere in your life that you need to wake up to. Suffering can only come about when your perception or opinion of how things should be, clash with the reality of how things actually are. If there were no clash, there would be no suffering.

Here are 3 things you will need to do to cure yourself from this suffering.

1. Stop searching for, and expecting there to be, an ultimate truth or "right way.

2. Realize that your opinions and the labels that you give to things are only your opinions and labels. We give labels to practically everything, for example "I am successful" or "He is a businessman" are labels. Labels like "successful" and "businessman" are not part of being human. They are labels you make up and foolishly attach to people and things.The trouble with doing this is that when you identify yourself with these things, and cling to them, you're going to be worried that they may fall apart - and that's where your suffering comes in.

3. Open your eyes to opinions and labels (your illusions) and recognize them for what they are. The fewer illusions you carry around with you, the fewer clashes you'll have with reality (what ever that may be!).

This may sound a little pompous but it's true. If you really grasp what I'm about to say, you'll be happy for ever. You'll no longer be a puppet, jerked this way and that by events and other people who are telling you how to live your life.

Do you worry about your work, your career, whether you are earning enough mo(n)ey, whether you are perceived as successful by other people? Most likely, you do. Most likely look around you and see people and say "Wow ...they've really made it. Look how well they're doing". You probably have people you know who are high flying professionals, and who have all the toys and trimmings, and you say "What a success they are!"

But who determines what it means to be success? Society does! (for most people at least). A society that, under the illusion of freedom and prosperity for all, does it's best to keep it's people sick.

Job titles, how much mo(n)ey you earn, and the toys you own, have nothing what so ever to do with being a success in life. People who put all their energy into the attainment or such things end up unhappy, miserable, and sick people. Being a puppet, controlled by what society deems a success, leads to anxiety and tension. It has nothing what so ever to do with being human, being at peace, and being happy.

And all this suffering came about when you identified yourself with a label. The label of mo(n)ey, or your job, or your profession. These are not who you are. They are things that come and go. When you stop identifying yourself with them, you'll find that no criticism can effect you, and you will be free.

Begin to equate success with being truly at peace within yourself, having no worries and being happy. Make this of primary importance in your life (and be pleasantly surprised at how things just begin to work out for you).

This used to be called our "Educational Evening" but thanks to feedback from some of our readers, we've re-named these events "Learn to Relax Class"!

It's a drop-in class every Tuesday night from 6.30 to 7.30 in Surbiton (Claremont Natural Health Centre - 15 minutes from London Waterloo). It costs £7 to attend and these evenings are suitable for anyone, regardless of age and stress levels, including the elderly and disabled.
