Learning to relax

A potent game of "Imagine if..."

This issues lesson has been adapted from one of the exercises of the MythoSelf Process - the model created by Joseph Riggio Ph.D. to enable people to choose a live that works.

Think of a person, real or mythical, that represents inner peace and calm. If you were to describe this person you would say that they seem to be relaxed as they go about their every day life. Take your time making your choice. (If you can't think of a person, then make one up and give them a name).

Now think about the following 3 things in regard to this person:-

1. How do they move?

2. How do they sound?

3. How would it feel to be in their skin?

Be as thorough as you can with these questions, take your time with them, and when you're ready "try on" being this person. Feel in your bones what it's like to move and sound like them. When situations come up, respond as you think they would. Be the person that represents inner peace and calm, and behave in such a way that others, if asked, would describe you as someone who is relaxed as you go about your every day life.

Stress Solutions+

A top tip for how you move your body

Excess tension remaining in your muscles can cause your spine to be shortened, just as too much effort accompanying an action tends to shorten the body.

To avoid this happening to you, with every action you take, sense your spine lengthening. If you get the feeling of your spine lengthening with most actions you take, then you will know that you are carrying out those actions well.

Under the spotlight

"Man is disturbed not by things, but by his opinion of things"

These words were attributed to the first-century Roman philosopher Epictetus and in a similar vein, Proverbs 23:7 says of the person with an "evil eye," "...as he thinketh in his heart, so is he."

Medical and scientific research is demonstrating ever more clearly that the things we can touch, taste, and measure frequently have to take a back seat to what we perceive or believe to be real. It's how we interpret things, or how our body/mind "sees" the concrete world around us, that is important to health. Another way of thinking about it is like this. Our potential for health and well-being is shaped by the negative or positive ways we think.

Have you heard stories of people who have got themselves well despite all the odds? Despite their doctor's less than hopeful appraisal of the situation?

Or how about the placebo effect? This extract has been taken from a book by Herbert Benson, M.D. called "Beyond the Relaxation Response":-

"When drugs such as khellin, the xanthines, or even vitamin E were first introduced, they were widely promoted by doctors and welcomed by the public with open arms as the answer to angina pectoris. Each drug was intially successful in treating 70 percent to 90 percent of the patients who were studied by enthusiastic doctors. Yet whenever skeptical doctors studied the drug's effectiveness, the rate of success dropeed to about 35 percent. Furthermore, whenever a new drug came on the market, doctors and pateints alike lost confidence in the previously popular drug, and its effectiveness in treating angina plummeted. Clearly, in these cases the drugs alone weren't responsibile for the improvement in angina. What made the drugs effective was apparently the belief and positive expectations of the doctors and the patients that the drugs would works. When belief and enthusiasm diminished, so did the power of the drug."

Pages 79 and 80 of the same book goes on to present a study where the personality traits of patients receiving radiotherapy or chemotherapy treatments for inoperable cancer were measured to try and predict their survival time.

The study revealed that the most important characeristic found to coincide with rapidly progressing disease, was an inability to relieve anxiety or depression.

At The 4th R we teach people with health issues the "coping skills" that will foster a sense of control over their situation. If you want to find out more, call Charles or Janice on 020-8974-8974, or visit http://www.the4thr.co.uk/services.html.
