" Stress Solutions+ : Give up wanting things to be other than how they are Under the spotlight : Does everything have to be "just so" before you can relax? Hot news : The 4th R media centre is in full swing! Hot topic : 5 top tips to keep you migraine free Up-coming training : Relax into Action Learn to Relax class : New weekly "drop-in" class Learning to relax Every time you catch yourself expressing what you don't want, reward yourself for noticing, and re frame it as something that you do want instead. For example: "I don't want all this stress in my life" could become "I want to find a way of bringing balance into my life". "I don't want to be ill" could become "I plan to be healthy" "I don't want to have to do everything myself" could become "I'd like you to take care of x,y and z" This simple switch in how you express yourself will revolutionize how you communicate with people (and yourself) and will bring you positive results. Give up wanting things to be other than how they are One of the things that happens when you do this is that a huge wei(g)ht is lifted from your shoulders. With this liberation comes the ability to decide what to be doing next. One of the major reasons why people remain stuck for so long, is because they won't just accept the position they are in. Imagine this scenario. A wi(f)e wants to begin her life as mother but instead she finds herself immersed in work - of the business kind. Her deepest held desire is having to remain on hold. This woman could be frustrated and resentful about the situation she's in. This is turn would lead to more feelings of frustration and resentfulness - because that's how the universe works. Or this woman could give up wanting things to be other than how they are. She could accept that this is how her life is right n(o)w. She could trust that everything's for a reason. This in turn would lead to a feeling of liberation and the ability to decide "what shall I do next?". When you give up wanting things to be other than how they are, you f(r)ee yourself to move forward in a positive way. Under the spotlight Many people view relaxation as something that they take time out to do before re-engaging in their busy life again. These people also rely upon external stimulus to help them relax. Television, alcohol, a book ...what ever it takes to distract their otherwise busy mind. If the external stimulus is present, and everything is "just so", they are relaxed. The longest period that people usually experience this, is whilst on their cherished annual holiday - that eagerly awaited one or two week break where it's possible to really wind down and relax. The trouble with this is that it takes a lot of people three or four days into their holiday before they actually wind down. It's the same with weekends. How often do you hear people comment on how Monday comes round again before they've even hard chance to recover from the previous week!! An alternative way of thinking about relaxation is to think of it as a way of being all the time. Being relaxed (at ease/at peace/in the groove/in the zone - what ever term suits you best) whilst you go about your every day life is possible once you know how; once you have learnt what you do with your body in order to generate being this way. The reason for this is that you have a unique way that you organize your body when you are profoundly relaxed and highly productive. One of the se(c)ret's to learning how you "do it" - your access code - is to begin to become aware of the language of your own body. For instance, how are you when you are at your best? The 4th R media centre is in full swing! Who'd of thought it?! Choose what you want to be doing, and then do it whole heartedly Ever done something knowing that your heart’s not been in it and your mind’s been off else where? If so, then you’ll know that it didn’t feel right, and whether you realized it or not, your health paid a handsome price for this lack of integrity. Harmony is important for health, so consciously choose what you want to be doing, and then do it whole heartedly. 2. Be considerate of others and your environment Replace your “Me, Me, Me!” mentality, with consideration of others and your environment. As a result you’ll maneuver smoothly around the curves of life, instead of knocking your way through it, and having to make frequent sharp adjustments to keep yourself upright. Contrary to what you might think, this is a lot less demanding of your body, and your health will reflect this. 3. Don't do things that will compromise your emotional or physical health Both your emotional and physical state have a huge effect on your health, so it is important to ask yourself questions such as "Is doing this in line with how I want my life to be?" and "Can I remain at my best if I do this?" before you make decisions. If the answer is "yes" to these questions, then proceed, if the answer is "no", then don't. If the answer is "not sure" - still don't. Take the time to find out how you feel when you are at your best, which means that it will be easier to spot habits and decisions that have an effect – good or bad – on your health. 4. Use the path of least resistance A master of Judo knows the sec(r)et, as does the wise Mum that has a 2 year old throwing a tantrum in the supermarket, and the executive who knows how to get his boss to agree with his plans. The sec(r)et is to use the path of least resistance. Quit battling head on because this drains massive amounts of energy from you and fatigues your body and mind. Instead think in terms of surrendering and re-directing the energy of the situation – take the path of least resistance! 5. Notice how you’re using and moving your body Don’t wait for extreme pain before waking up to what’s going on from your neck down. Common ailments such as migraine, back ache and even various digestive and respiratory problems can be eased and often avoided all together when you identify and stop harmful habitual patterns of posture and movement that create and keep tension in your body.
