An insiders shortcut to putting things in perspective

This relaxation lesson is a potent way of putting things in perspective and provides welcome relief from feelings of stress and anxiety. It's one you can do anywhere, anytime, and it's effect improves with practice. All you need to do is sit back, read the short paragraphs below, and "go for the ride".

Sitting in your chair, notice what it feels like to have both your feet making contact with the floor...........................expand your awareness out to the floor itself, and see in your minds eye how far out the floor spreads...... until it reaches the walls which make up part of the larger structure of the building where there's a door to the street. A street that joins with other streets............................. and more streets still..................... until eventually neighboring villages, towns, cities are reached.

And these places connect with other places until new countries are reached...............................sometimes across water, other times not.

Imagine in your minds eye the people of these other counties in their homes................. and people out walking in nature................... amongst trees that have been growing for hundreds of years...........that reach high into the sky where the stars shine bright and the sun and the moon can be seen..........................and other planets that are known to you............and the possibility of there being more.........

The shocker that cured millions could cure you

I'm referring to the classic health bestseller "Sugar Blues" by William Dufty. It is a relentless, hard-hitting report that will open your eyes to the addictive and poisonous effect of refined sugar (sucrose). It exposes sugar as our generation's greatest medical killer and it's responsible for modern plagues such as anxiety and depression.

Sugar is the prime ingredient in countless products (even savories) and it has the effect of scrambling the brain and sending the body into crisis. (not great if your health requires you to be relaxed!) The difference between feeling up or down, sane or insane, calm or freaked out, inspired or depressed depends upon the chemical balance in the brain and sugar is a potent drug that really messes up that balance.

Emotional distress and how it shows up

Our bodies shape expresses what we have experienced in life; our sadness, disappointments, satisfaction and joy. We know this because our natural emotional expression is based on uprightness, but when stress sets in it distorts that uprightness in order to cope.

There are four ways in which our body reshapes in order to cope: rigidness, density, swelling and collapse, and the various "inner workings" of the body do what's necessary to compensate for the new physical shape. The result of this is that the body loses its full range of emotional expression (because the body is no longer in its natural expression of uprightness) and gets locked into a limited emotional range built upon the stress pattern of stiffening and shrinking.

The rigid structure

The emotional message that this structure presents to the world is "I won't", "I am bigger than you", "give me recognition and appreciation". The rigid stiffens, pulls back, braces and elongates in response to challenges to his ego. The rigid person dominates and controls by assertion.

The dense structure

The emotional message that this structure presents to the world is "make me", "don't humiliate me", or "I can't". Structurally this person is compacted and pulled in. He makes himself smaller by pulling in, holding in or holding down.

The swollen structure

The emotional statement of the swollen structure is "take me", "let me get to you". Structurally he is blown out, he blows up, gets bigger, intimidates. His real fear is that he will collapse.

The collapsed structure

The emotional message of this structure is "I can't", "give me support". This person shrinks, collapses in on them self, and deals with fear, anger, need or weakness by giving in.
