5 Top Tips To Keep You Migraine Free Migraine Awareness Week is on 3rd-9th September, and Charles Moore of relaxation for health specialists The 4th R, gives 5 top tips to keep you migraine free. 1. Choose what you want to be doing, and then do it whole heartedly Ever done something knowing that your heart's not been in it and your mind's been off else where? If so, then you'll know that it didn't feel right, and whether you realized it or not, your health paid a handsome price for this lack of integrity. Harmony is important for health, so consciously choose what you want to be doing, and then do it whole heartedly. 2. Be considerate of others and your environment Replace your "Me, Me, Me!" mentality, with consideration of others and your environment. As a result you'll maneuver smoothly around the curves of life, instead of knocking your way through it, and having to make frequent sharp adjustments to keep yourself upright. Contrary to what you might think, this is a lot less demanding of your body, and your health will reflect this. 3. Don't do things that will compromise your emotional or physical health Both your emotional and physical state have a huge effect on your health, so it is important to ask yourself questions such as "Is doing this in line with how I want my life to be?" and "Can I remain at my best if I do this?" before you make decisions. If the answer is "yes" to these questions, then proceed, if the answer is "no", then don't. If the answer is "not sure" - still don't. The 4th R encourages you to take the time to find out how you feel when you are at your best, which means that it will be easier to spot habits and decisions that have an effect - good or bad - on your health. 4. Use the path of least resistance A master of Judo knows the secret, as does the wise Mum that has a 2 year old throwing a tantrum in the supermarket, and the executive who knows how to get his boss to agree with his plans. The secret is to use the path of least resistance. Quit battling head on because this drains massive amounts of energy from you and fatigues your body and mind. Instead think in terms of surrendering and re-directing the energy of the situation - take the path of least resistance! 5. Notice how you're using and moving your body Don't wait for extreme pain before waking up to what's going on from your neck down. Common ailments such as migraine, back ache and even various digestive and respiratory problems can be eased and often avoided all together when you identify and stop harmful habitual patterns of posture and movement that create and keep tension in your body. Migraine Awareness Week is an annual UK health campaign aimed at raising awareness of migraine, a condition that affects all ages, social classes and cultures - with an estimated cost to the economy of more than £1 billion. The campaign is organised by the Migraine Action Association. 4. Migraine is more than just a headache. In addition to the intense throbbing pain that often occurs on just one side of the head, sufferers can experience visual disturbances, increased sensitivity to light, sound and smell, nausea and vomiting. Unlike 'regular' headaches, migraine can last from four hours to three days. Migraine affects around 15 per cent of the population in the UK. 5. Migraine headaches are believed to be triggered by a fall in the levels of a chemical called serotonin (5HT) in the brain. This results in changes in the blood vessels and neurotransmitters (chemical messengers), causing the symptoms described above. 6. A number of different factors can trigger migraine, stress and anxiety being two of them. 7. The 4th R produce a free bi-monthly publication called "Relaxation Matters".
