Palpitations caused by stress

Whose heart hasn't begun to race as soon as they heard about a deadline or a new project? Heart palpitations are very common in those that don't know how to relax and can even be the sign of more serious medical problems. If you've noticed that you're having palpitations even when you're not stressed, talk to your doctor first. If you feel that your palpitations are directly related to your stress levels, here are some relaxation techniques you can use.
  • Breathe in with your belly - When we're feeling stressed, many of us take shallower breaths. Instead of inhaling as deeply as we can, we're breathing only as little as we need to. For today, try to breathe as deeply as you can whenever you can remember to do so. Place your hand on your stomach and breathe in, trying to make your hand move outward and then exhale as your hand move in toward your belly button. In doing so, you are engaging the diaphragm to move your lungs in a more effective way, oxygenating your body and slowing your heart.
  • Think about the worst case scenario - If your heart is racing, you're probably worried about something that's happening in your life at that moment. Instead of letting life get to you, stop for a moment and think about what the worst possible outcome of the situation would be. Most of the time, it's not that bad. Finding your perspective will allow you to maintain your composure as well as your regular heart beat.

  • Cut back on your work hours - When you're having palpitations, it may mean that you're spending a bit too much time in the office or on everyday tasks. To help you slow down, try to cut back on your time doing these things. You want to create more time in each day to relax and be calm. As you do this, your body will begin to enjoy that slower pace and will grant you a slower heart beat in return.

  • Hold your breath for a moment - Sometimes when people's hearts are racing, it's because they're breathing too much, even hyperventilating. Try to slow your breathing by holding your breath for a few seconds, then exhaling forcefully, then breathing in deeply, holding the breath and then exhaling forcefully.

Palpitations can be serious, but when you take the time to talk to your doctor and manage your stress, they can be a distant memory.
