Music Therapy

If you've ever played a certain song to get you in the mood, you've already experimented with music therapy. Just as with other creative therapies, you can harness the way you feel about your life by synchronizing your body with the sound of music. This can be a simple practice in which you listen to music that makes you feel better or it can be a more structured format in which a licensed and trained music therapist helps you work through your feelings.

The idea behind music therapy is that the certain sound waves can affect the wavelengths in your body and in your experience. By taking the time to change these sound waves, you will begin to create a more relaxed environment for yourself and for your life. And since it is so easy to use, music therapy can be continued for long periods of time until the person begins to feel better about their life and their stress.

Often used in elevators, soothing music is supposed to calm those that do not like to be in enclosed spaces. In the same way, music therapy relaxation techniques can help to create a different mood or different response in a person. This type of therapy is often used for depression, stress, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, and other mental disorders. By music therapists have also used these relaxation methods to help stroke victims recall their speech patterns as well as for soldiers that have come back from wars.

In the therapy setting, music can be used in a number of ways. Many therapists like to use relaxation techniques in order to calm a person when they are having anxiety during certain situations. For example, those that might have troubles with communicating with others might learn to be less stressed by listening to a relaxing piece of music when they are practicing their communication with a therapist.

Other things that music therapy relaxation methods can be used for include cognitive development, self awareness and even motor skills. Some therapists have also used music to help enhance a patient's spiritual aspects in their lives as well as in their ability to open up with others in a personal setting.

Choosing music therapy doesn't necessarily mean that you need to see a specific music therapist, but some guidance in the beginning can help you get started on the right track.
