But what can you do? Deadlines aren't going to go away, so how can you learn to manage them as well as learn how to relax about the ones you already have? While it might seem impossible now, there are ways to keep your schedule on track.- Get a calendar - More often than not, people missing deadlines because they simply forget when they are. To prevent this, come up with a list of all of your current deadlines and then get a calendar out and mark these deadlines on the calendar. This will help you remember when things are due and how you might want to manage your time. You can choose to use a computer based calendar, a PDA, or a paper calendar - whatever works for you.
- Start earlier - Another reason you may be missing deadlines is because you're not starting your projects and your tasks early enough. This leads to problems at the end because you simply don't have enough time to get things done. Try to start your projects earlier in order to get things done in the time frame you are allotted.
- Create a step by step plan - If you break down your projects into smaller tasks, creating smaller deadlines for each of those tasks, you may be able to manage the project more easily and create a timeline that actually works for you and your deadline. Smaller tasks are also far less intimidating. When you first receive a project, try to break it down into five different steps - more if it's more complicated.
- Stay organized - The more messy your desk is and the more cluttered your home, the easier it can be to miss important deadlines. Try to clear away your clutter once a week to be sure that you're not hiding anything important under the piles of chaos. Create filing systems for your important papers. Find baskets that can hold your important projects as well as things that can wait a bit longer.
Deadlines are important when you're trying to deliver something to a client or a customer - it's a part of your job. By taking the time to make plans to meet your deadlines, you will become more confident in your working ability as well as more impressive to your coworkers and boss.
