Meditation

No matter what kind of stress relief guide you pick up, you're bound to find some entry on the virtues of mediation as a relaxation technique. And this is for a good reason. Meditation as relaxation training is something that anyone can do anytime, anyplace. That makes it a stress reducer that you can take anywhere.

But many people are intimidated by meditation because of how it is presented in the media. It seems like something that's difficult to do or requires that you're agile enough to sit in a lotus position - but that's simply not the case. Meditation at its core is the practice of quieting the mind and stilling the body. When you simply stop thinking for a period of time, your mind has a chance to rest and to rejuvenate itself.

Practicing meditation is easy, though it does take more practice than other relaxation methods. You need to find a quiet spot to sit or lay down (assuming that you won't fall asleep in that position). Get yourself nice and comfortable and then try to quiet your mind and not think about anything. True, this is difficult at first, but as you practice, it will become easier. Try to focus your attention on your breathing, if this helps. Watch your breathing from the inhale to the exhale to begin to take your mind off other thoughts.

If you find that you begin to think of something during this relaxation training, simply stop, let the thought go, and try to refocus on your breathing again. At first, you will find your mind difficult to settle, but this is normal, so don't worry. Just start with a few minutes a day and try to work your way up to thirty minutes of meditation a day.

These relaxation methods will help you in a number of ways. You will feel relaxed immediately, you can lower your blood pressure, and you will notice that you're not as tense during the day. What happens is that your mind becomes used to the feeling of relaxation and then reverts to that quiet mode when it becomes stressed.

In time, you will be able to simply push away any thoughts that you don't want in your head due to meditation, letting you deal with stress in a much more healthy and happy manner.
