Making excuses

Giving excuses is just another way of saying that you are avoiding responsibility for your actions. When you're stressed and unable to focus on the tasks you need to do, you might begin to give excuses to anyone that will listen. You want to offer explanations as to why you couldn't finish what you promised or what you didn't do as good a job as you were expected to. But give too many excuses and you can begin to lose respect among your peers. Here's how to avoid giving excuses and start managing stress.
  • Take on less than you can handle - If you have any input into your workload, try to take on less than you can handle at any given time. This will help you always get your tasks done on time and done well without any excuses. As you begin to have more confidence in what you can do, you can take on more then.

  • Be honest - When you're honest with others you know, you don't have to make excuses for your actions. Simply tell people why you couldn't do what you said you would do and then be ready to hear their response. Many people will respect you more if you stand up and say what really happened.

  • Take responsibility - Instead of making up excuses for things that may go wrong, offer to correct them instead. This will help you to show your usefulness as an employee and a coworker. And the more you stand up for your work and for your performance, the more you will learn along the way. By knowing that you are responsible for certain things and that you will need to stand up for your job, you can help to limit the excuses you will make.

  • Think about the excuse first before you tell it to someone - In your mind, tell yourself the excuse and be honest with yourself about how you would respond to it if you heard it. If you find that you don't like the excuse that's coming out of your mouth (in your head), you might want to rethink saying it at all.

  • Imagine telling your friend the same excuse - By stopping for a moment and imagining telling the same excuse to a friend, you will begin to see just how far fetched your excuses might be.

Giving excuses does not bolster your reputation with your peers or your bosses, so why do it any longer? With these tips, you can stop making excuses and start making a better impression.
