| Lack of communication caused by stressLack of communication with coworkers and/or bossWhen you're feeling stressed, it can be easier to simply hide away from everyone until you're done handling whatever needs to be handled. Perhaps you have a large project that you need to cover and you just want to work on it without interruption or maybe you just like to work alone. In any case, you can begin to stop communicating with your coworkers and your boss, which may not be a bad idea necessarily, but completely ignoring others can also cause troubles. Here are some ways to handle interactions with others and still work on preventing and managing stress. - Set clear boundaries - When we're feeling like we're being invaded by coworkers and our bosses, it's often because we're not telling them what we need. To help prevent any confusion, be clear about what you need from the others around you. If you need them to be quiet, let them know. If you need their instructions to be clearer, let them know. If you need to knuckle down and work on a project without interruption, let them know. People are more than accommodating if you only just ask for what you want.
- Repeat everything you're told - If you're finding that stressful times often cause miscommunication, you will want to verify everything you hear. It can be helpful to have an email exchange that will confirm what has been said between two people as well as what has not. You will also have a record to refer to if a problem arises. When you're speaking to someone in person, be sure to repeat everything they say to you and confirm what they mean.
- Write down what you hear from others - By keeping a log of what you need from others and what you've asked for you will be able to check in on them to see the status of your queries. A small wipe off board is helpful as it can be easily changed with the different requests you have made.
- If you're not sure, ask - When you're under stress, you might hear things differently than they were meant to be heard and understood. It happens. To prevent problems from occurring, ask whenever you are unclear about what is expected of you. While it might seem like you are being annoying, it's much more of a pain to find out about problems when they're already occurred instead of taking the time to prevent them.
