Irritability

When you're stressed out, you've probably snapped at someone in your life. And while you didn't mean to do it, your stress just got the best of you for the moment. The good news is that you don't have to be the person to avoid in times of stress with these useful stress management tips.

• Get some sleep - More often than not, irritability is caused by not getting enough sleep each night. When we don't allow our bodies to slow down and recuperate from our days, we stay in the heightened and stressed out state. Try to get to bed earlier tonight, even if it's only five extra minutes.

• Count to ten or twenty - When we're having troubles with how to relax during a stressful time, just slowing down time can help take our edge off. Try counting to ten or twenty before responding to any query when you're upset. While you might look silly waiting to respond, you will look sillier if you lash out at someone.

• Eat a balanced diet - Surges in energy from sugar and caffeine can cause our bodies to act in an erratic manner and not handle stress as well as we might like. Try to limit your consumption of these kinds of foods during stressful times. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet as well as water to keep your energy balanced and calm.

• Vent to no one - Many times when we are irritable, we will talk to someone else and try to vent our frustrations to them. But while this feels good initially, it can become a habit. If you feel you need to vent, try writing down your frustrations on a piece of paper and then ripping it up. This will help you create a physical transition from frustrated to not-so-frustrated.

• Remember that you're not the only one - Too often, managing stress feels like something you have to do on your own. But look around you. Right now, there are plenty of people that feel the same way and are having the same day that you are. Try to remember this when you are talking with others and it will allow you to lessen your own irritability.

Being irritable doesn't mean that you need to take your frustrations out on others. By simply acknowledging how you feel and taking the time to think it through alone, you can defuse yourself and carry on with stopping stress.
