Not knowing how to relax, their bodies can begin to initiate the fight or flight response, causing digestion to slow and even stop completely. This is not a comfortable way to feel. But those with troubles with indigestion can take steps in how to prevent stress as well as other relaxation methods that will quell any surges of adrenaline in their bodies.- Go for a walk - After you eat, try to get up and walk around for a few minutes to allow your stomach to process the food before you head back into work or stressful situation. Even a fifteen minute walk can be enough to get your digestive juices flowing and leave you feeling refreshed when you go back to your desk.
- Eat slowly - Often, indigestion arises when we haven't chewed our foods properly. Try to take your full lunch time (at least twenty minutes) to savor and enjoy the process of eating. Chew each bite thoroughly until it's liquefied and then swallow. Put your fork down in between bites and then pick it back up when you're ready for more.
- Eat light - When you eat smaller portions of foods, your stomach is better able to handle their digestion. Try to eat only half of your meals at a time, saving the other half for later if you're still hungry.
- Drink plenty of water between meals - Instead of drinking liquids during meals, try drinking water only in between meals. This will allow the food to be digested more quickly, preventing indigestion. When you fill your stomach up with water, the digestion process can be slower.
- Avoid spicy foods and foods with a lot of acid - Certain foods can also be harder for your body to digest, so it's best to avoid them completely when you're under stress. Things like peppers and tomatoes can be very upsetting to the stomach and can cause the digestion process to slow.
- Enjoy a long lunch hour - If you can, try to make your lunch hour something you look forward to instead of an interruption of your day. Savor the foods you are eating, talk with others about anything but work, and simply enjoy yourself.
When you take the time to appreciate the foods you eat and how they fuel your body, you will begin to eat at a slower pace, preventing indigestion.
