Increased smoking due to stress

If you're a smoker that's dealing with stress, you're probably smoking more when you're stressed than when you're not. It feels like it's helping you release some of the tension of your life and even distracting you from a lot of stress. But in reality, smoking only heightens your body's response to the stress that's going on in your life, causing your body to work harder than it necessarily needs to. While quitting smoking may also not be the best bet for you during a very stressful time, finding other stress management techniques can help you weather your stress without a smoke.
  • Use your smoking time for ‘you' time - Instead of heading outside for a cigarette, you may want to try closing your eyes and shutting yourself away from the world to relax. Try breathing exercises and visualizing calming scenes in your mind. The more you do this, the more you will find that these quiet times are far more calming than a cigarette ever is.

  • Try increasing your activity - When you exercise, you're not only helping to fend off diseases and stress, but you can also make it easier on yourself to quit smoking in the future. By finding an activity that can replace your smoking time, you will begin to not only fend off any weight gain associated with quitting smoking but also begin to change your habitual response to stress.

  • Keep your hands busy - Instead of reaching for a cigarette, try to do other things with your hands. You might want to knit or clean your home or perhaps call someone on the phone. The more you replace your habit with other actions, the more you will find that you are cutting back on your smoking habit.

  • Identify your triggers - Make a list of all the places and situations in which you would reach for a cigarette. You need to avoid these situations and feelings in order to start avoiding cigarettes altogether. So, if you find that you always smoke when you're under a tight deadline, try to come up with another way to handle your stress during that time - and have that planned out so you can do that activity immediately.

Smoking is harmful to your health - you already know that. But since you're already under stress, the point is not to quit altogether but rather to find ways to manage your stress. In time, you will simply quit naturally.
