Headaches caused by stress

Stress is enough of a headache without causing one in the process. But as your body begins to feel the build up of stress in your life, it can tighten the muscles around your neck and your back, causing a tension headache. Thankfully, there are many relaxation techniques and stress management tips that can help you manage these stress headaches.
  • Keep a headache journal - If you find you're having a lot of headaches, try keeping a journal of when the headaches occur and what you're doing on those days. Sometimes, headaches are caused by certain foods or activities, but you'd only realize that if you kept a journal of these events. Avoiding these foods and activities can prevent headaches entirely.

  • Eat frequently - When your blood sugar drops too low, you can get headaches during stressful times in your life. Working through lunch might seem like a good idea, but it can also cause your body to react by giving you a headache. Keep your head pain free and your energy levels up by eating every few hours.

  • Drink plenty of water - More often than not, dehydration is to blame for your headaches. Be sure to drink plenty of water when you're feeling stressed out so that you can avoid these kinds of headaches. Try drinking a glass of water to see what happens and then continue to drink water throughout the day. Some find that drinking a sports drink at the onset of a headache can often help in reducing the pain.

  • Use acupressure - Sometimes, pushing a certain point on your body can help your body to relieve stress and headaches related to stress. Take your hand and press the spot between your thumb and your index finger (the ‘webbing') with your opposite hand's thumb and index finger. Hold the pressure constant for about thirty seconds to a minute. Release and repeat on the other hand. You should feel immediate relief.

  • Push your head back in place - By pushing on the space between your spinal column and the base of your neck, you can reduce the presence of a headache.

Of course, if you can get a full body massage, that can be a great way to reduce the number of headaches you have due to stress and tension too. Managing your workload and your stress levels will allow you to prevent headaches in the future.
