Frustration and stress

Being frustrated is a natural response when it comes to stress. You can feel so out of control at times and that there is nothing you can do about it. Add in the normal stresses of everyday life and a long To Do list and it's just no wonder that you feel like you can't get ahead in anything. To help ease your frustration, why not try some of these relaxation methods?
  • Ask yourself if everything is as bad as you think it is - For many of us, we can create exaggerated situations in our heads that seem much more frustrated than they actually are. Stop for a moment to describe the situation to yourself as though it were happening to someone else. From that description, try to decide whether you need to be as upset as you are.

  • Take time away - In any stressful situation, walking away for a few minutes is generally the best way to defuse yourself. Try walking down the hall or to the bathroom for a few minutes in order to calm and collect yourself. Wait until you are breathing normally and your heart rate is back down to go back to your original spot.

  • Do something else for ten minutes - When you stop what you're doing and divert your attention, you can ease some of your frustration. Often, it's a particular task or moment that is frustrating us, so when we stop that moment and that action, we can stop the way we feel about it too. Do anything else for ten minutes and then go back to the frustrating event or project.

  • Create a plan - Frustration doesn't help anyone if it's not productive. Try to find a way to deal with whatever is frustrating you. Take one step in some way to create a better situation. For example, if you're frustrated that your computer ate your presentation, talk to the computer help desk to see if they can recover it. Even if they can not, at least you will have taken a step to try to resolve the situation.

  • Yell - Sometimes you just need a god yell, cry, or scream to help yourself feel better. Try to do this when no one's around of course, but why not let out your frustration in this way? It's healthy and it will certainly calm you down.

There will be plenty of times in your life when you will become frustrated, but it's how you deal with them that will make you stronger and more resilient.
