Feelings of panic

We've all felt that initial panic when we've been assigned more than we can handle or when someone lets us down on something we need done. But how we respond to those feelings of panic can help us manage our responsibilities without feeling dread. The key in how to prevent stress is learning relaxation techniques that really work and then utilizing them every day.
  • Find the most important tasks - When you're creating a list of things to do for the day, be sure to highlight the most important tasks and be sure to get those tasks done. By taking the time to point out what's truly important and what can wait, the feelings of panic can begin to subside.

  • Be flexible in how things get done - Though you may want to get all of your errands done in an hour, it may not be possible. When you're feeling panicked, you need to be ready to be flexible about your plans. Have a secondary plan in place so that you can move into that plan when the first one fails.

  • Step away from whatever is making your panic - If you work at home, for example, taking a brisk walk for a half an hour can help you alleviate the panic you're feeling. By stepping away from the situation and trying to do something completely different, you can come back to the panic situation fresh and ready to attack it. If you can't get away, try switching projects for a while until you begin to feel calmer.

  • Tell yourself that everything will be fine - Too often, we can become panicked because we fail to tell ourselves that things will be fine. We get caught up in the ‘it's never going to happen' and ‘I'm sure to fail' so often that we begin to believe it. Instead, why not remind yourself that you have tackled such high pressure situations in the past and have succeeded. There's just no reason you can't do it now too.

  • This too shall pass - By remembering that the stress you're feeling right now is temporary, you can begin to loosen the hold of panic. Time keeps marching on and so will you.

Panic is a sort of ‘normal' state these days, but it doesn't have to be when you know how to calm yourself and come back to the present moment.
