Anthony Sharot | Feeling overwhelmedThat feeling of dread has hit everyone at one point or another. No matter how good we are at managing stress, sometimes life can just wash over you, making you feel as though you're drowning in responsibilities. But there are things you can do to prevent yourself from feeling overwhelmed - even in the toughest times. • Make a list of what NEEDS to be done - Too often, when we begin to be stressed, we put equal importance on all the things we need to do in our lives. It's no wonder that we feel overwhelmed. To help, create a list of things that absolutely have to be done during the day. Don't worry about your week or the month, just focus on today.
• Check off things as you finish them - It will help you to see that you are getting things done during your day, so cross items off your list as they're completed.
• Learn to say no to things you really don't want to do - When you're asked to do anything, stop and let the other person know that you have to think about it before getting back to them. This will give you some space to actually ponder what you're being asked and respond in a way that is right for you. Think to yourself if you will complain and be upset about saying yes to anything you're asked. If you think you will, say no with a clear conscience.
• Delegate some things to others - Even if you're not in a managerial position, you can learn to delegate. Try to give some of your lesser responsibilities to others. For example, do you really have time to iron your shirts? If not, take them to the cleaners to get them pressed. While you might spend more money, you will save yourself the hassle of another thing to do. In your family, have your children or spouse help you with house responsibilities.
• Take five minutes to calm down - It's easy to go from feeling overwhelmed to relaxation. When you begin to feel yourself veer into panic, stop for five minutes. Just sit and close your eyes without doing anything but breathing. This simple step can help you regain your focus and find solutions to problems you may be having. • Stress management begins with realising what is causing the stress. If you're feeling overwhelmed, you can control this feeling by taking away some of your responsibilities and lightening your mind as well as your load.
