Feeling depressed

Managing stress means managing all of the possible symptoms of this condition - including feeling depressed. While many of us simply get angry when we're under pressure, others can begin to doubt themselves and doubt their ability to succeed - often leading to depression. But in these stressful times, getting yourself out of that fog can be as simple as these relaxation techniques and tips.

• Find out what's bothering you - Sometimes just having a name or a reason for our stress can help us feel better. Are you frustrated about your performance? Did your boss yell at you? Try nail down why you are feeling this depression and realise that you can change the way you feel about it.

• Try on the opposite feeling - The idea of ‘fake it ‘til you make it' can really help in these situations. While you don't want to strain yourself, try smiling and acting as though you're happy. Sometimes you will forget what you were depressed about in the first place and begin to see things in a more positive light.

• Give yourself a reason to be happy - Since you're the only one that can make yourself happy, you need to start finding ways to add happiness into your day. Maybe you like nature and a walk at lunchtime would help lift your spirits. Perhaps you're under a tight deadline - try treating yourself to dinner or a fun activity when you've accomplished your goal.

• Make a list of the things that you've done well each day - Too often, depression is a symptom of not feeling like you're effective in your life. Try creating a list each day of the things that you have done well, no matter how small they seem. Did you hold a door open for someone? Did you turn in an assignment on time? These little things add up and by keeping this list over a long period of time, you can always refer back to it when you're feeling down.

• Get active - Your body produces endorphins when you're active in your life through exercise. Just simply going for a walk or dancing around your home will help you increase these mood elevators and help you feel more like yourself.

When you're feeling depressed, realise that you're not alone in this feeling. But by taking the time to do good things for yourself, you will be able to get out of the depression and into your life again.
