Eating disorders in summary is when eating or the lack of eating becomes an unhealthy obsession. The two most common eating disorders are Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa. Anorexia is often self-starvation while Bulimia is generally binging and purging. Binge Eating is also an eating disorder that happens when people eat excessively for emotional reasons without vomiting or using laxatives to prevent weight gain. The common denominator in eating disorders is that they are emotional disorders. Eating, lack of eating, excessive exercising or binge eating happens because of a person’s inability to feel happy or content within them self. They use food to combat it, consider food an enemy or exercise tirelessly in the pursuit of a body image that they never seem to attain. Chronic stress or chronic anxiety may cause someone to overeat. Feelings of inadequacy may cause a person to diet to excess and jeopardize their health. Eating disorders create ill health in a physical sense as well as an emotional sense and many people with severe cases of Anorexia or Bulimia Nervosa eventually die as a result of their illness either through suicide or failing health from starvation. Eating disorders are highly destructive and should be treated with care. Part of healing from an eating disorder is learning to manage the anxiety and stress associated with the disorder.
