Drop in productivity

If you've been under a lot of stress for a long period of time, you may notice that your productivity is also diminished. This is problematic when you're being judged on the amount of work you do each day or each year. To help you manage your stress and increase your productivity again, here are some relaxation methods and tips that will help you reset your brain and your body for work.
  • Take more vacations - While it seems counterintuitive that taking more breaks will increase your productivity, it's a proven fact. When you allow your mind to rest from your work's responsibilities, you allow it to be fresh when you actually do return. Try to take your vacation days each year and schedule in quick getaways whenever you can. These are guaranteed to help you regain your energy as well as your efficiency.

  • Leave work at work - When you bring your work home with you or work longer hours than you need to, you will diminish your productivity automatically. This is because your brain recognizes that you have more time allotted for the task, so it takes more time to complete it. Instead, create a work schedule and abide by it. You should only work your scheduled hours and always leave your work at work.

  • Change your tasks every ninety minutes - Because the human attention span seems to be about ninety minutes, try to change your tasks that often. If you're working on one project, take a break at the end of this time and then switch to something else. You're still working as much, but your brain will be fresher if you constantly give it something new to do. Play with your schedule to see how this might work for you.

  • Change your location from time to time - If you normally work in your office try moving to another location in the building, if you can. For those that work at home, try to work in another room in your home on occasion. This will help you feel like you're starting over during your day and can help you to stay fresh and productive.

Productivity will go down if you don't take immediate steps to both manage your stress levels as well as your attention span. Try to remember that your body can only work so hard for so long before it needs a break. Try to give yourself a break from time to time and your work will benefit.
