Sam Riordan | Drinking too much because of stressIf you find yourself reaching for a drink during stressful times, you're not the only one. With each soothing drink, we feel like we can let go of our stresses and our worries. But in reality, the more we turn to alcohol to deal with our stress, the higher our risk for health effects to rear their ugly heads. To properly deal with stress in our lives, we need to learn about stress management methods that not only take the place of drinking, but also help us deal with our tension in a healthy way.- Avoid the drinking situation - While you may have always gone to the bar or local pub after work, try instead to go for a workout or for a walk. You want to replace your usual habits with something a bit more helpful. Find an activity that you would like to do and then avoid the invites for drinking.
- Get rid of the drinks in your home - When you're under stress, why tempt yourself with the alcohol that's already in your home? Remove all of this temptation right now and allow yourself to drink only when you're out at a restaurant where you have to buy each individual drink or glass.
- Don't avoid confrontation - When you're upset about something at work, try to work to solve the problem instead of numbing the feelings with alcohol. If you're having troubles with a coworker, talk to them about it to see how you can both work toward a resolution. If you're having troubles with your boss, express your feelings and ask what you can do to help the situation. This is a very healthy way of dealing with stress - getting to the root of it and dealing with it.
- Think about why you may be unhappy - In some cases, you might suffer from constant frustration because you're not in a situation that makes you happy. Try to stop for a moment to see if there's something you can do right now to change your life and your situation. While you may not be able to quit your job right now, you can start looking for other jobs if your current situation is driving you to drink.
Drinking doesn't solve anything in your life; it can cause even more problems. To help you manage your stress, why not learn how to work through your feelings instead of numbing them?
