Profound Relaxation Becoming ever more at ease within yourself
Charles Moore The4thR | Obsessive dieting and stressWhile some people turn to over eating to help them feel less stressed, others may turn to obsessive dieting. This dieting is usually a way to control some aspect of your life in order to regain the sense that you can indeed control some of your life in a productive and positive way. But ordinarily, this backfires. When you begin to diet obsessively, you can actually begin an eating disorder that can begin to control you - which ends up hurting you both emotionally and physically. When you obsessively diet as your way of preventing or managing stress, here's what you need to do.- Report to someone - What you want to do is write down everything you've eaten (honestly) and show it to someone that you trust each day. This will help you and your friend monitor your eating habits and decide whether or not you need to change the way you are eating before it becomes problematic. However, this step only works if you are honest with your friend about what you are eating.
- Get rid of dieting books and stop reading about dieting - For many that use obsessive dieting as a way to de-stress, they will read about dieting obsessively to find out what else they can do. Try to stop reading these kinds of books and websites until you truly have your impulses under control. Give your books to a neighbor or a friend and block yourself from the dieting websites. This will help you take the focus off your dieting and back onto your life.
- Look at food as a fuel - Instead of looking at food as the enemy, realize that you need to eat in order to fuel your body. Look at each meal as an opportunity to give your body the nutrients and calories it needs in order to do the things you need it to do.
- Create a menu that makes you feel good - Many of us have certain foods that we enjoy eating because they make us feel good or special. Try to include some of these foods into your weekly eating in order to remind yourself that eating can be fun and enjoyable.
Obsessive dieting may seem like it's doing you good - you're getting thinner and have more time to work - but in the end, it can harm your body and make you weak. Perhaps it's time to use food as fuel and not as a way to make your stressful feelings go away.
