Anthony Sharot | Conflicts with co-workersIf you're feeling stressed at work, the last thing you need is conflict with your coworkers. But invariably, that can be the first thing that happens when you're all under stress. If you were to say one wrong thing, the rest of the employees may take it the wrong way and you could have trouble. To help you manage stress and friction between you and the other employees, here are some options for preventing stress as well as dealing with interaction issues.- Realize that it's never about you - When you think that a coworker is treating you unfairly, try to keep your emotions out of the way and try to see it from their point of view. They're under stress too, and they're probably just trying to vent a little of their frustration at you. Unless they're really overstepping their position's boundaries, taking something personally from another coworker is just not worth your time or your energy.
- Take the time to talk it out - Instead of silently seething, why not take the time to talk it out with the coworker you are having troubles with? They probably want to get the issue resolved just as much as you do, so your invitation to talk may be just what you both need. By talking to each other about what you need and what you have been feeling doesn't work for your interactions, you will create the groundwork for a working relationship that always works for the both of you - now and in the future.
- Ignore the gossip - If you're already having troubles with coworkers, be sure to avoid the gossip that is being spread around the workplace. Often, these rumors are lies about people on the staff that simply aren't going to help alleviate any tension. Try to rise above this kind of talk by ignoring it completely. Of course, you also don't want to contribute to it.
- Bring in the boss if you can not handle the problem - Instead of having constant problems with a coworker; bring in your boss to the situation to see what help they can be. Often, they will be able to mediate your problems and help you come to an understanding.
Conflicts with coworkers can be damaging both to your stress levels and to the environment of your office. Instead of letting them simmer and eventually boil over, try to use some of the damage control tips.
