Casual sex and stress

Sometimes when we're under stress, we begin to feel lonely. And while this is a normal response, how we deal with it can be problematic. Some turn to increased casual sex in order to help them feel okay and loved, but this doesn't always work in the way that it's intended to work. You may end up feeling lonelier because you're not making a connection with the other person, but merely trying to fill your life with someone that pays attention to you. Here are some things to help you in managing stress in a more positive way.
  • Talk to your friends - When you're feeling stressed, call up your friends and talk to them. This will help you feel less alone in the world as well as give you a new perspective on your life and your worries. You will also be able to hear about their problems, which can give you a new outlook on what you're going through. You might also want to make a date to meet once a month for lunch or some other fun activity to keep your connection strong.

  • Talk to your partner - If you're in a relationship and you're feeling like you want to have sex with others outside of your relationship, this may also be a sign that you're not feeling connected to your partner. Try talking to your partner more and setting up times to ‘date' and be with each other.

  • Create your own time - You will also want to create times in your week that are devoted to you and you alone. By learning to enjoy being on your own, you will not always feel like you need someone else to tell you that things are going to be okay. Take up a new hobby or an old one in order to find time for yourself.

  • Take some time away from sex - If you're under a lot of stress and you're feeling like you might want to engage in casual sex, you might want to abstain completely. By simply avoiding the situations in which you may be tempted, you will avoid your response altogether.

Increased casual sex can be a problem both for your emotions and for your physical health. When you're under stress and you notice that your response is to have more sex with anonymous partners, you need to realize that you're not helping yourself to feel better. Stop and ask yourself what you will feel like the next day - if you will be happier, then go ahead. But if not, avoid the problem altogether.
