Treatment for Cancer using the Functional Relaxation System as a method of learning how to relax

South West London or over the telephone

Cancer is a leading cause of illness, and death, around the world.  It is persistent, pervasive, and strikes people of many ages in many ways.  The most frightening aspect of cancer is just how many different kinds of cancer there are, and how many of those cancers are difficult to detect before they become deadly.  Certainly much progress has been made in recent decades, but most medical researchers agree we have yet to scratch the surface of potential treatments for cancer.

What causes cancer?

In most cases we do not know for sure, which is extraordinarily frustrating for doctor and patients alike.    Not surprisingly, stress and anxiety are thought to play some role in the development and growth of many kinds of cancers.  Stress and anxiety do indeed create many ill effects on your health, such as an impaired immune system, high blood pressure, and other physical symptoms.  It is quite reasonable then to suggest that stress and anxiety also affect cancer in some way.

Cancer and relaxation

If you are diagnosed with cancer, regular and frequent practice of relaxation techniques are an excellent way to aid your treatment and recovery process.  Your body is better able to stave off illnesses such as cancer when it is in a state of relaxation and calm.  The exact mechanism for how this works is not well understood, but the results are undeniable.  Relaxation techniques can have a significant positive effect on your spirit, emotional health, and attitude, as well as on your body’s physical health.  Focusing on being relaxed and calm are certainly not substitutes for proper medical care, however taking yourself into these states can certainly support your mind and body throughout your illness and into recovery.  Learning to relax is a very useful (perhaps even essential) supplement to go along with traditional or alternative treatments for cancer.

Health benefits of being relaxed

While the general health benefits of being relaxed are generally acknowledged, there are specific benefits that cancer patients realize through the practice of relaxation strategies.  For example, deep breathing and calming thoughts contribute to strengthening of the immune system and lowering of blood pressure.  These benefits are particularly important for patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments because such treatments often impair the immune system and leave patients more susceptible to common germs and viruses.  Relaxation also helps cancer patients to better deal with the discomfort and nausea that accompanies many kinds of cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation, medication and surgery.
