| Absenteeism due to stressEveryone wants to stay home form work every now and again, but when you start responding to stress by calling off work, that can be harmful to your career. There's nothing wrong with an occasional sick day or even a mental health day, but when you're repeatedly calling off sick, you're not only lowering your status with your boss, but you're also avoiding stress instead of dealing with it. Here are some stress management techniques you can use to start correcting this kind of response.- Know your employer's policies on sick time - By knowing what consequences you could face, you will be fully informed when you want to take some time off. Knowing that you might get into trouble might help you talk yourself out of time away. You might also want your employer to verbally explain the rules to you so that you have a picture and image in your head to refer to when the urge arises.
- Give yourself a break from time to time - You can call off when the going gets to be too rough, but you should also be sure that you aren't taking advantage of this ability. Allow yourself a certain number of sick days each year so that you don't feel like you're completely restricting yourself from ever calling off, but also try not to use them until you really need them.
- Make a deal with yourself - Instead of calling off immediately, go into work and tell yourself that you will stay for a few hours. If you still don't want to be there, you can leave then. But more often than not, you will be able to coax yourself into staying for the rest of the day. This will take the pressure off of you to be there the whole day, but it will also give you the chance to change your mind about leaving.
- Take your vacation days - Many times, employees will take mental health days in order to get a break from it all. But when you have vacation time, why aren't you using that? Make sure to use all of your vacation time each year in order to rejuvenate and relax from your time at work - don't scrimp on this valuable benefit of being employed.
Missing a day from time to time should not be a problem, but if you continuously miss work when it's stressful to be there, you may indicate to your superiors that you are not reliable. And that's not the kind of worker you want to be, is it? What Relaxation Training Specialists The 4th R Can Do For You We invite you to learn more about our services as they relate to:
